Politically Correct

May 27th, 2009

So I was sitting around last night watching the news about how the state of California legislature upheld the constitutional amendment the voters wanted banning gay marriage.  Then I starting thinking about the term “PC” or “Politically Correct” and how it’s really an oxymoron.

Think about it.  Politicians are suppose to be the voice of the people and in this case “the people” (and the nation as a whole) do not want gay marriage.  Therefore, to be PC would mean you stand for 1 man/1 woman marriage and voice opposition to gay marriage.

So, I think I just called myself PC (maybe for the first time ever).  Unfortunately, with this train of thought I am not PC, because, I did not vote for B. H. Obama.  Nor do I stand for most of the decisions he has made as president.  I do not support abortion, Judge Sotomayor, closing Guantanamo, turning our back on our troops, giving tax money to corporations, big government, or throwing the constitution in the garbage.

I actually think most Americans don’t agree with his decisions either and are going to regret supporting him for president (if they aren’t already).  A lot of voters just wanted a president who wasn’t George Bush.  Well I hope you like what you got.

Catch-up on Movie Reviews

May 11th, 2009

So I haven’t put up any movie reviews since I rebuilt my site.  I watch a lot of movies and I’ll try to give you my two cents about if they’re watchable or not.  I’ll start with the most recent watches.

Star Trek

My Rating:

Plot: Capt. Kirk and his trusted team on the starship USS Enterprise boldly go where no man has gone before in this installment of Gene Roddenberry’s sci-fi franchise that follows the early days of the intergalactic adventurers.

Review: What a ride!  I was excited about this film from the trailers but also somewhat hesitant because I loved the original.  The actors did a great job but special kudos to Bones.  It was kind of strange hearing those classic lines coming out of someelse’s mouth.

Should You Watch It: Absolutely

The Midnight Meat Train

My Rating:

Plot: Leon Kauffman, an ambitious New York photographer whose reckless search for a serial killer known as “the Subway Butcher” leads him down a dark and dangerous path.

Review: I just wonder how many gallons of fake blood they used.  This film was not scary or suspenseful and the story was not that compelling but it was still somewhat interesting.  The language was much better than expected for a horror film, but the last scene did have nudity in the form of a dead woman.  Surprisingly several death blows were very stylized.

Should You Watch It: If you’re bored and want something bloody.

Grace is Gone

My Rating:

Plot: Stanley Phillips, an ex-military man trying to find the courage to break some devastating news to his two daughters: Their mother has died while serving in Iraq. As he works through his complex feelings about his wife’s death and the war, Stanley delays telling his girls the truth, instead taking them on an excursion to a theme park. The film won the Dramatic Audience Award at Sundance 2007.

Review: This story is quite compelling and tear-jerking.  John Cusak is one of my favorite actors so I was already inclined to like this film.  There is some brief language that really stood out.

Should You Watch It: Maybe.

The Day the Earth Stood Still

My Rating:

Plot: In this updated version of the 1951 classic sci-fi thriller, Keanu Reeves stars as an alien named Klaatu who’s sent to Earth to warn the leaders of the world about the consequences of their dangerous ways. Joined by a heavily armed robot companion, Klaatu informs the people of Earth that the constant aggression carried out against one another has raised the ire of an alien species, which is now threatening to exterminate all of mankind.

Review: I haven’t seen the original so I can’t compare it but I enjoyed this film.  The special effects were cool; especially near the end when everything was getting destroyed.  The negatives of this film was the acting.  Keanu Reeves like almost all of his films lacked emotion, but since he’s an alien I won’t hold this against him.  Also starring is Jennifer Connelly.  I’m not a big fan of her but she did okay.  The kid in this movie I wanted to strike down with a crushing blow.

Should You Watch It: Sure, but I won’t buy it.

Punisher: War Zone

My Rating:

Plot: Frank Castle, a one-man force of vengeance known as “the Punisher,” battles mob boss Billy Russoti. Left disfigured by the encounter, Russoti reemerges as Jigsaw, a psychotic villain with a small army at his command. Too bad for the baddie that the Punisher is preparing to annihilate Jigsaw and his reign of terror, armed with a cache of high-tech new weaponry by the handy Microchip.

Review: I really enjoyed the Punisher film with Thomas Jane.  This one not so much.  There’s an F-Bomb like every other word.

Should You Watch It: No

Yes Man

My Rating:

Plot: Based on the comedic memoir by Danny Wallace, Carl, a man who, as an antidote to unhappiness, resolves to say “yes” to everything that comes his way. Initially, Carl’s new practice proves successful in lifting his spirits, but soon he is confronted with unexpected and seemingly unbeatable challenges stemming from his unique self-imposed regime.

Review: Classic Carey? He tried, but no.  This film was funny in parts but still disappointing.  His co-worker was definitely the star of the film.

Should You Watch It: If you want to.

Invasion

My Rating:

Plot: In the process of researching a mysterious alien epidemic that’s changing the nature of human behavior, a Washington, D.C., psychiatrist learns that her son may be the planet’s only hope for survival.

Review: I was very hesitant to watch this film b/c I do not like Nicole Kidman but it finally rose to the top of my queue so I gave it a chance.  This film is yet another stab at Invation of the Body Snatchers.  This time it was actually well done.

Should You Watch It: Sure, but don’t buy it.

MirrorMask

My Rating:

Plot: Screenwriter Neil Gaiman’s masterful allegorical drama, which melds live actors with animated characters, portrays the existence of a 15-year-old girl named Helena in a civilization ruled by light and darkness. When the Light Queen loses her equal hold on the kingdom, plunging it into gloomy shadows, Helena takes it upon herself to restore the universe back to its rightful balance.

Review: I’ll start with the good.  The graphics were stunning.  Okay, the good stops there.  The acting and story were horrid.  I can’t even explain the visual presentation.  It’s like Guillermo del Toro on an acid trip.

Should You Watch It: No

Sweeney Todd

My Rating:

Plot: Sweeney Todd, a man who becomes a deranged murderer seeking revenge after being falsely imprisoned. To add to the macabre nature of his crimes, he enlists the help of his lover, Mrs. Lovett, who disposes of the victims by baking them into meat pies — sought after by all of London.

Review: It’s no secret I like musicals but if you don’t this film is not for you.  Depp did a great job and not too shabby as a singer either.  This story quite tragic and bloody.  I really enjoyed it.

Should You Watch It: Yes

Chitty, Tomatoes, and a Jug

April 22nd, 2009

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang
We went to the Fabulous Fox Theatre last night to see Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. It was a lot of fun. Laura’s favorite song was “Toot Sweet”.

Heirloom Tomatoes
The tomatoes I ordered from Burpee came in yesterday and now they’re in the ground.
Black Krim- gorgeous dark color, tangy flavor.
Burpee’s Supersteak- the original “giant” with beefsteak flavor.
Big Rainbow- yellow and red streaked flesh. Mild and sweet.
Brandywine- one of the best tasting tomatoes of all time.

Laura’s sick so this morning I mixed up some Joggin’ In A Jug. 4 parts Apple Juice, 4 parts Grape Juice, 1 part Apple Cider Vinegar, and 1 part Honey. She has a very sore throat and this stuff usually helps.
